|Cím||St Albans Avenue, mayfair west, 2029 Johannesburg, Dél-afrikai Köztársaság|
Our suburb, Mayfair West dates from the heyday of Johannesburg’s golden age when it was a mining boomtown. Today it’s a vibrant and colourful multi-cultural community, typical of the changing and regenerating face of the city.
The cottage is a spacious 50 square meter living area featuring a kitchenette and sitting area, sunny bedroom and modern en-suite bathroom with shower.
The kitchen includes a fridge, microwave oven, toaster, crockery and utensils. You’ll also find a ready supply of freshly ground coffee and South Africa's famous Rooibos tea! If you stay longer than three days, a complementary bottle of South African wine will await you on your arrival.
In summer you can have meals outside in any of the three outside garden patio areas.
The bedroom features a comfortable double bed with crisp linen and duvet. The room also includes a hair dryer, extra blankets, towels, heater and television.
It goes without saying that the WiFi is free!
You’ll also be within a five minute walk from our local shopping mall with a post-office, supermarket, banks, and the best fish and chips in town!
Because we’re centrally located most sightseeing attractions and places of interest are within easy reach and only a short ride away. The University of Johannesburg takes less than five minutes to get to, while the SABC, Apartheid Museum and Gold Reef City, and the attractions of the rejuvenated Johannesburg CBD and the arts districts of Newtown and Braamfontein are all reachable in less than fifteen minutes.
For transport, we’re a mere ten minutes from the Gautrain Park Station from where you can catch either a taxi or the famous tourism red bus for a day trip around Johannesburg's main attractions. A new and fun travel option is the Tuk-tuk, three-wheeled scooter taxis that run in our area and can connect you with Rosebank, Melville and other suburbs for less than two Euro per trip.

We spent 5 days in Adeline & Charl's cottage and were SO pleased we did!
HOSTS: It's very obvious that they themselves use a lot of vacation rentals when they travel, as they are one of the few hosts who provide simple things like coffee/tea, oil/vinegar or dish soap... small things, but annoying to have to go out to buy as soon as you arrive. (Plus Adeline is a professional baker... mmmmm! fresh biscotti!)
They took the time to put together an amazing collection of maps and recommended eateries, museums, universities, etc. within 15 km of the cottage - we stay at a lot of these vacation rentals and this is by far the most helpful collection I've seen. A big thank you to Adeline and Charl for compiling it - it was VERY helpful for us and we didn't even need our own map to explore the surrounding areas!
ACCOMMODATIONS: The cottage is lovely, remodeled recently with very high-end touches, a comfortable bed, and a great stereo with a wide variety of music, and streaming options like Apple TV and Netflix. The wifi worked well.
For a few days, the cottage had everything we needed. Sometimes we stay in places for up to 3 months, and this cottage would have been too small for a long-term stay as it didn't have room for a full stove/oven, and there's no seating except for the dining table. But for a week, we were more than happy.
If you're there in good weather, it's got the most lovely garden I've ever seen, with plenty of seating and many birds! We were completely charmed by the garden.
NEIGHBORHOOD: I wanted to see some of the city neighborhoods of Johannesburg, not just the generic suburbs, so I was really happy to find this listing in Mayfield.
The neighborhood itself is lovely - young, mixed cultures where you can buy fish and chips at a tiny Indian shop in the mall a block away or hear the call to prayer from the mosque (a converted church from when the neighborhood was all-white under apartheid) a block away - luckily they skip the early morning calls to prayer, or at least they don't broadcast them at 5 am like they do in Muslin countries!
We were able to easily explore some of the lively neighborhoods like Melville and Braamfontein nearby, ate at some excellent local pubs and pizzerias, visited art galleries, and saw a powerful photography exhibit at the Africa Museum in Newton (another nearby neighborhood) - the Rise and Fall of Apartheid.
This little cottage was a complete gem and I highly recommend staying here!
